You need steel wool. You can get it fairly cheap at home improvement stores. Just fill the hole with a wad of it and when the mice try to chew through it, the fibers of the steel wool poke them in the mouth (quite painful) and they won't try it again. The problem is that they may just create another hole somewhere else.

They can find their way out of everywhere including very tiny spaces. Years ago, I lived in a place that suddenly got mice. Nothing worked-boards, exterminators, poison-they wouldn't go away. What finally worked was an electronic shield-actually 2 of them. It hurts their ears and keeps them at bay. Humans can't hear it but the mice can and they run away.

NO; but it does prevent felines from tramping around delicate Christmas tree glassware and antiques since the feline hair gets a "shock" from static

No. I tried aluminum foil and they ate right through it. You are going to need something sturdier, like sheet metal or cement.

try filling the hole with cement mixed with broken glass - they wont nibble through that !
