It really depends on what you want your system to do - and today, what a good system can do will surprise you. For starters, the only safe systems use cellular monitoring (no phone line required, no phone line to cut!). Anything else is old news, since even an internet connection is easy to cut. Plus, the company should not charge extra for the cell radio, or add on big monthly fees for cell monitoring. The next thing is interactive services - you will be amazed what you can get today. So here is what you might look for:

1) 100% cellular monitoring - no phone line required, and none to cut!

2) Remote arm/disarm capability

3) Special apps for iPhone, Blackberry, Android

4) Email & text notifications on anything happening at home: doors opening, etc.

5) Video services - live viewing from any web connection (including phone) and motion-activated clips

6) Smart home - remote light and thermostat control

In other words, the game has changed, and the "old school" companies are way behind. And you can get a better system for very little money that you can install yourself, fully programmed and ready out of the box - that means more savings, and you can add devices at any time, and even move the system with you. When researching, I strongly recommend that you look at all the reviews you can find, and Yelp! is a good place to start. Shop hard, and don't just focus on the big names: look for safer, smarter, simpler, and more affordable - you will be happy you did! Here is a good article on what to ask - worth the read!

From what I know, ADT will call the system & lock you or a new security company out of the system, for lack of payment, not continuing service

I very briefly looked at the Front Line Alert .com website. $34.99 a month for monitoring?????? Are you freaking stoned???

Go over to http://www.watchdogsuperstore.com/dont-get-robbed-by-monitoring-companies.aspx

and see why you should OWN your own system, not pay ridiculous prices for a "contract". Contracts are reoccurring revenue for these companies. THAT is why they will "GIVE" you a system so cheap.

THERE IS SUCH THING AS "FREE" LUNCH,,,,,or a security system.

Same thing with cell phones. BUY the phone, it's yours, no expensive contract that makes THEM money. Then pay for service.

Yes, it will cost you a few bucks, maybe 500 bucks. Get "your own" system. Then pay for monitoring. "Your own" system will only require changing out the "motherboard" (about $100) in the existing box, not the whole thing. It would take me about 1 to 2 hours to program.

Do not get Vivant. They installed my system and it never worked properly. They activated the system without telling me I needed a permit, as well. After a false alarm with no alarm permit with the worthless HPD, I am out$100. I made an appointment for the installer to return and fix the system and he never showed, never called. The problems with it? They installed a doorbell camera and the doorbell ceased to function, I got never ending (sometimes alerts to my phone 4 times an hour) that the battery is low in the downstairs motion sensor. The fire alarm sensor place next to my smoke detector fell off the ceiling after a week. The front door could not be closed all the way or the new automatic door lock/security lock on the front door would not close; I had to 'almost' close the door to lock it. Had the system a month and no one came to fix any of those. I called and canceled. They will not reimburse me for the false alarm. So aside from the headaches of trying to find batteries (wasted gas and hours going to store after store) for the motion sensor, the 3 hours I gave them to install the system, the $15 I paid to register my system with HPD, I am still liable for the $100 fine and $15 surcharge. If it sounds too good to be true, it sure is. Do not recommend them ever.

Years ago, when was in business. I have had a couple of professionally installed alarm systems. I had nothing but trouble with them. Because of this, even years later, I kept putting off getting another system, this time for my home. I can now say that I'm the perfect example of why you should be extremely careful about listening to people like Glenn Beck when you decide to purchase a security system.. He's been hawking Simpli Safe for some time now. And after all, he's in the business of making money and advertising is big bucks in his company's bank account and in his pockets. First, Simpli Safe is over priced. I just found a system that is considerable larger, has quite a few mor entry, window sensors, a nice large pad that unlike Simpli Safe, I can easily read, an indoor alarm as well as a large out door alarm that even looks like an alarm. It has six number dialing, is wireless, and if you have a computer in your home, can be set up to send the alert that way. Secondly, people have been having problems with the dispatch, mine doesn't work. And lastly, having a decent product means nothing if you as a consumer have to deal with people who apparently believe they do not need customers in order to remain in business. Want to know one way you can get a handle on whether a company is worth dealing with, and on the up and up? Click on home security systems and if you see one company that has multiple websites, and I mean a half dozen starting at the top of page one, and sometimes page two and three. If they appear to be bombarding you with their sites while pushing the other companies off the front page, be advised, you may have found a company you would be wise to pass by. But remember, check out as many companies and the blogs that tell you what customers have and are experiencing. Also keep in mind that some companies have set up their own sites that are intended to fool you into believing the site has no connection to their company. Then they write their own comments detailing how great their products are. Of course, they use fictitious names masquerading as happy customers. Then there are sites that are set up to keep you from posting a negative comment. One way is for the site to not recognize your email address or the code letters and numbers you must type in, in order for them to determine that you are not automated spam I'm not saying that Simpli Safe does this. I haven't investigated that angle. But, after dealing with Simpli Safe, I can say that it is my opinion that Simpli Safe simply sucks.
