So what appeared to be an infestation problem in our apartment early this fall, actually ended being an infestation problem in our whole apartment building (over 18 floors with about 9-10 apartments on each floor).

We first noticed a line of ants (which we later realized that they are pharaoh ants) on our kitchen counter then in our living room (right next to each other). We called in management and they brought in exterminators who came and sprayed the corners and edges of all the apartment.

The problem only got worse and it spread to bedroom #1 then the bathroom then bedroom #2 and #3.

They even made it into my laptop keyboard (everytime I pressed "F4", "P" or "L" they would rush out.

After doing much researching, we discovered that spraying them (like the exterminator did) actually causes them to panic, spread out and create satellite hives.

We went out and bought 10pcs of ant bait for about $15 from Canadian Tire. We spread them near where we found ants. This definitely removed the problem in a few of the rooms and reduced it in a couple others but the problem is still there. It has been almost 3 months from when we started using the ant bait.

I found a hive inside my Calculus book which was about 20cm from my laptop. I found another hive in the case of a pricey pen I got as a gift, which was 10 cm away. I went through an intensive cleaning and it was seriously disgusting!

So there are ants still in the bathroom (not as much but still there). In my room, I see an ant a day crawling on my laptop screen but I kill it immediately.

I bought a box of cookies which I hid in my underwear drawer across the room from my desk/laptop. A few hours later I felt like having some so I took it out and put it on the desk. (note that I haven't yet opened it). When I unfolded it once I saw a lot of ants.

I quickly put the whole thing into a plastic bag, closed it tight and threw it away. I then emptied out my underwear drawer and took it apart and found quite a bit of ants which I sprayed with windex (Don't ask, it was the first thing I could think of at 4am). I saw a couple more crawling in the cupboard where the drawer was so I sprayed them too.

I'm not sure if these ants came from the box/store or from my apartment. I bought it from Pharmaprix so I'm not sure what to think.

The association of apartments all were complaining about an infestation too. They recently built a new condominium right next to ours and had to dig into the hill. Could they have possible migrated into our building to look for a new home?

Either way, I'm sick and tired and seriously disgusted having to share an apartment with these ants. Also, I live on one of the high floors.

What can I do to remove them from my apartment and prevent them from entering/spreading again?

The guys that sprayed for the ants more than likely work for the apartments. Don't they know ants crawl above the floor?

They usually like sugar and Pic and Terro are good to put out. It can take days for them to eat the bait and take it where they are staying which might be in the walls.

Your right, when the ants detect someting toxic to them, they gather up the eggs and larvae and move along with the queens. They have several queens.

When the ants take the bait to their nests, they feed the queens and it will get rid of the queens.

The bait you have should get rid of the ants in time. If they do not take sugar, Combat is good. The terro and Pic have sugar in them.

The neighbors need to put out bait too.

Try the product on the attached link. I have had very good results with it in the past for a couple of species of ants in Georgia ( not Pharaoh ants ). It does list them as one that it works on. The idea is for they ants that are foraging for food take it back in to the colony and any that they share it with die. Eventually it wipes them all out including the Queen!

Terro is readily available, inexpensive and easy to use.

Good luck!

I have a book called...1001 , all natural secrets to pest free property..#7 is the best one to kill the whole colony!

1.............place 1 tlb spoon of ivory liq soap in 1 qt of warm water, mix well but dont bubble, spray areas they walk and get rid of their poop trail.....spray mist any group of ants you find..they hate soap and water....

2.........most ants have a natural aversion to cucumber peelings....they will avoid them like the plague..it says to place them in areas they walk about and window sills.

3......................clean your counter tops with a solution of...1/2 vinegar and 1/2 water. Clorox can be used ...same ratio..spraying about.

4................an all round insect spray....take 2 cigerettes and place in 1 qt of water and allow to stand over night...if you are mixing a huge container of this...use 2 cigerettes per qt......allow to stand over night....the nicotine that is released is a deadly poison.......spray along walls.......or where they walk...spay ants as well...dont allow children or pets to get to this stuff.

5............leave bay leaves, mint leaves....cinnamon and garlic fresh herbs around...on the areas they walk....

6.dust with baby powdercayenne pepper......soak cotton balls or string with citris oil..they wont go near

6.............I personally shake a large jar of coffee grounds around my cupboards....at along the enterance ...to keep ants away..it does a great job...

============================================================

7............................mix together.......1/2 tsp spoon of borac acid and 1/2 tsp spoon of honey . MAKE INTO CRUMBS AND .place mixture into small bottles with lid off.. the ants will carry this back to the colony AND ZAPPO................COLONY GONE...mix larger batch for bigger place...place crumbs in each apt.....it will get the whole colony....

( THIS IS A DANGER TO PETS AND CHILDREN)

================================================================

8..............TALCUM POWDER if you dust the area with talcum powder, this dries the ant out and kills them

I have about 10 more remedies if you need them...email me
