Two fast-growing shade trees I'd suggest are black cherry and shademaster locust. Both have very small leaves so provide dappled sunlight and no raking required. You would have a tall tree within ten years with either choice. Black cherry has lovely white flowers in spring after several years followed by red berries in summer that the birds love. Its leaves are poisonous though so watch out small children don't eat them.

Nuts---pecans, walnuts, black walnuts, almond, pistachios, pine nuts

The tree provides healthy food for you and the birds and animals and good wood when the trees mature

ok heres some good trees.

Peaches- they grow alot!!! of peaches

fig tree- they grow a bunch of figs

apricots-grows some apricots, ours didnt work so well, but it atleast supplied, unlike most orange or lemon trees.

plants-

squash- they work out nice and supply alot of squashes.

peas- they grow nicely and supply easily retrievable, yet tasteful snacks(if your really trying to show em, this is a good idea, and squash isn't)
