My mother and I live alone with two cats. We have several times authorized the building's porter, a very nice man who lives with his family in the basement of the building, to enter our apartment when we are away on vacation to drop off our mail and feed the cats. He returns the key when we come back.

Over the years my mom and I have noticed random little things go missing inexplicably from the kitchen and a room next to it which we use for storage. Tonight my mother dipped her hand into a jar in which she keeps packets of Splenda and that she knows she filled over the brim not too long ago. She realized that the jar was half empty. Only random little things, like spoons, magnets from the refrigerator, a Brita water filter. It's not noticeable and never when we are away for a long time, when we know we left the keys with someone specific. We think someone is coming into the apartment from time to time when we are not home and taking little things that are not immediately noticeable. All our valuables and things in our bedrooms have so far been unaffected.

I'm trying to figure out how to get around this problem...I know there are "nanny cams" and stuff like that but I don't know how to use them or look for a good one and they seem to be fairly expensive. I would like to change the locks on our door, but one, the door is kind of old and it's very expensive to replace, and two, we have to let someone into the apartment when we go on vacation for the cats' sake, anyway. My mom is considering getting a lock with a keypad, the combination to which we can change whenever we like.

I'm looking for any other ideas or feedback - much appreciated

Setting notes around the apartment like in the refrigerator, in the cupboards i would pad lock the places you don't want them in even the bedrooms use door knobs with keys. Say to them in the note that you buy the items for a reason for them to please stop taking stuff that can not be replaced. But do you pay the person who picks up your mail and feed your cats. If you don't then they are taking that as payment. If you do, then let them know that you don't appreciate them taking the stuff if they have already been paid.I mean who eles could it be but the people who have your ley.

sounds like someone is messing with you if all they do is take small stuff. Could it be a former resident who still has a key?you need to report this to the manager or the police. This is more than just tresspassing on two ladies.Take the cat to a kennel when you go away and get another lock for real.

have adt or some company like that put in a wireless alarm system. they will install them for almost free and a small monthly monitoring fee. that will protect your home 24 hours a day from anyone coming in. you can always leave the alarm off when someone need to drop something off or give them the code then change the code when you get back.
