I live in southeastern Michigan and I plan on getting a small, one or two bedroom apartment within the next year. Any ideas on utility cost?

I live near Lansing, MI and have lived in apartments here for about 4 years. My utility costs per month have usually been around:
$25 to $60 for light & water
$25 to $55 for energy
Also, I've found that the most expensive months for light and water are August, September, and October. The most expensive months for energy are December through March. So your total utility cost will always be around $35 to $100 per month, assuming basic rates don't change much.

It depends a lot on where you live and the size of the apt. If you like in the south and have to run the a/c non-stop 6 months out of the year, then you're electric bill will be a lot higher. If the apt. has gas heat and you live in the north then you can expect a gas bill over $100/month. Is the apt building newer or old? You can lose a lot of heat through drafty older windows. For the last 2 years I lived in a 2 bedroom townhouse 1100 sq ft. 5 years old in NC. The electric bill which included heat was around 75-95/month (67 degrees in the winter and 74 degrees in the summer). Water was 55 every other month. Cable and Internet was 120. Groceries for 2 people ran about 200/month. On top of that there are other items to consider when living on your own. You also have to buy things like paper towels, toilet paper, medicines, vacuum cleaner, cleaning supplies, laundry detergent. And if you've never lived on your own then you have to buy dishes, glasses, furniture, bedding. It adds up to $$$$. Theres a lot more than just the cost of rent. hope this helps a little bit

Depends on what they are charging. Electric is automatic, which is usually about 60-80 dollars a month. Everything else could be included in the rent.
