Red is live (think red you're dead). Black is neutral. Green is earth. They were the old colours. Now the colours are blue neutral (first part of neutral rhymes with blue if you wish to remember this way). Brown is live - think brown knocks you down. Yellow/green is earth wire. Hope this helps you to remember in future. The live wires are the dangerous ones.

Live should either be red old cable
Brown if new cable
Neutral Black (old cable) or blue new cable
Earth Green (old cable) Green and Yellow bands new cable.
If you are putting in a complete new cooker circuit you will have to get it done by a part p approved contractor

if wiring a cooker you need some one qualified to do it, so its corgi tested ( a british standard..as its to do with gas or electric) dont do it yourself unless you are a qualified cooker fitter..incase you do it wrong and get a gas leak/explosion...sorry to be a pain but this is the la\w now! xx
