I have recently moved to a house not far from Manchester in the UK and to my horror I have seen a few ants in my kitchen and it is only March and freezing outside. I had a real problem with these a few years ago, winged ants all over my house. I really can't face that again, is there any way I can get rid of them permanently or can anyone recommend a reasonably priced pest control company in the Manchester area who could eliminate them for me?

Whatever you do do not use Boric acid, it has been banned as an insecticide in the UK and you could get a very big fine if you are caught.

Garden or Black ants (Lasius niger) used to be one of the most difficult pests to treat as the nests are usually underground and often under the floor of the house itself. The queen is in the nest and she can go on laying eggs for around 15 years.

Sprays and powders are useless as you are not getting to the heart of the nest and killing the queen. Ant gels have proved ineffective in the past as they have killed the workers before they have a chance to spread the gel around the nest.

In the last year or so we have some really effective products available to us and these have proven highly successful. They are professional use only products and so you do need to send for a pro but for example we are so confident in them that we now offer a 3 year guarantee.

Hmm hopefully these are ants that like sweets.

Go to pharmacy and get boric acid (very cheap). Mix it together with sugar 1 to 1 ratio, and boil it in a little bit of water. When cooler pour it into shallow lids and place where ants roam. The consistency at this stage should be like wet sand. This is extremely effective against roaches and ants.

This is extremely effective for me. In fact, ants were gone overnight.
