Difference between featherbed/mattress pad?

I'm going to college in the fall and on the list it says mattress pad. I have a bad back and want to buy the best one available so that I can sleep comfortably and am confused as to the difference of a feather bed, mattress pad, or a fiberbed. Any insight you can give would be helpful. Thanks.

I, too have a bad back. I have had feather beds, memory foam, and just regular foam pads. Here is my opinion:



featherbed- extremely comfortable at first, loses "momentum" after awhile, hard to clean, if you hit it, dust flies out of them (from the feathers). If you have allergies, featherbeds may not be for you. And lastly; after awhile, feathers may poke you.



reg foam pads (eggcrate)- just bad, worth the $9.99 you pay for them, but that's it.



memory foam- The best invention ever! I love this mattress pad. I have had it for about 5 years and it's still going strong. Everyone who sits or lays on my bed loves it! I have never gotten such good sleep and pain-free at that!! Worth every penny.
