Question:
Kitchens from eBay - did anyone ever purchased one?

People who live in UK - have you ever purchased a kitchen from eBay? I am only asking those who had experience, not suggestions of what may or may not happen. All the kitchens from the kitchen shops are so expensive that everytime we have an estimate I stop breathing for a few seconds. But there are good looking kitchen shops on eBay - and I am hesitating of getting one - but then - you have to pay all the money upfront (sometimes they cost around £2000 - which is just a fraction of what high-street shops are quoting, but still a lot of money just to pay it with little guarantees - the shop can disapear next day and you'll never find them...)
So please - any advises from your own experience please?
Thank you

Yes I did this and bought a solid oak kitchen with solid wood carcases from a small company in Nottingham for about £3.5k. A bit of a mistake as he kept delaying delivery (beyond the point of being able to raise dispute with ebay) when he did deliver parts were missing, parts were damaged. Promised to deliver the replacement parts but never phoned when he said he would. Would not answer calls and then would text to keep me quiet for a while. This took nearly 6 months after he was paid. I managed to make contact with a number of other ebay customers who unfortunately where also having problems. He had offered discount for cash payment direct to his account. One couple did this to their loss. Luckily I had paid through Paypal through my Credit card. Contacting my credit card company they took over and firstly reversed the charge in dispute but in order for this to go through we had to return what he had delivered - very difficult as we could not prove he was still trading. So we did not return what I had. At the end of the day the Credit card company re billed me but as they have to make sure I received the goods and services that I paid for they found a similar kitchen from another supplier and got quotes for what I did not get/ was damaged. I was refunded this amount. At the end of the day I redesigned the kitchen to use what he had delivered and yes it is a nice kitchen. But the stress and the length of time of the process was not worth the saving.

Hopefully this would not be the case for you but be careful

- if you are buying from a manufacturer, email previous customers first,

- pay by paypal, and through your credit card (not bank account)

- keep all corresponence, ensure you have a direct phone number and address before paying

- if buying (2nd hand?) from individual then pay cash on collection so you can change your mind if not all alright.

Looking back I would probably still buy but I think I would go for the complete freestanding units that are available on ebay as you are buying completed items not all the bits to make the item and so less to go wrong.

Good luck

As an independent designer I am always very wary of cheap kitchen offers. Bare in mind that the seller will still want to make money out of you so however much of a bargain it may sound, think about the quality you are getting. Also beware of flashy studio photos of the kitchen for sale. The photos almost always show many more units and higher spec worktops and appliances than are actually included in the "deal". Look out for things like " 8 unit example" or "sink and worktops excluded" This is often a sign that you may not get quite what you were expecting. Remember a well designed kitchen does not necessarily need to have a lot of units. Go for a tall larder unit for food storage, you'll save tons of space. Have one stack of drawers rather than drawers in each unit. Wall units also come in various heights. The taller the unit the fewer you need for the same storage. Hope this helps.

When my son upgrades on electronics , toys what ever it goes strait to a box in our hall marked Donation kind of like our family recycling bind and in the spring we load it all up Call a cab don't(drive) and we drop it all off for the local consignment store for a donation. In no way is it done for a profit it all for 100% donation .

lol... i moved into our house 2 1/2 years ago, after a damp course we had to refit the kitchen cos it was just ruined, after several quotes ...(ouch 25k for a half decent one... 15k for cheap, horrible, chipboard) i went to ebay and yeah it took a few weeks...but i found a gorgeous solid mid oak kitchen, complete with solid granite worktops, belfast sink, brass taps, and a solid oak worktop.... i got it for £500..and its GORGEOUS, i went to the other side of the country for it and paid on collection... so all in all with van hire, petrol etc i paid about £750 (ish?),,, i also bought my bathroom suite from ebay (claw bath gorgeous taps, immaculate ...£100!!!) hmm i would never buy new again!!! it takes time and you have to keep looking to separate the 'rubbish' but there are real gems to be had if you have the patience.. I've never bought one, but I know someone who sold theirs on Ebay, it was in good nick and went for a few hundred pounds. They're usually sold as 'buyer collects' so you'd need a man with a van and someone who can fit it, but if you have these it's worth thinking about.

If you can fit it yourself have a look at the screwfix direct web site - they have very cheap kitchen units
