The traditional longhouses in Boreneo consist of a huge (surprisingly long) wooden building on stilts. (Animals usually kept below) A passageway runs down the front open to each family room. Each time a family is added to the house a new room is built on the end.
Traditionally these were by the river, which served as a food & water source, as well as bath & tip.
Now the longhouses are moving to the sides of the new roads & are made more from brick & concrete. This makes them a lot safer, as you can imagine how quick a 500 meter wooden building on stilts would burn!
