Question:
Where to buy & how to install a two-stage evaporative cooler?

My husband and I bought an old victorian style house (two stories, built in the 1930s). It has been well kept and up to date (not deteriorating, updated electrical etc) except for that there is no central air system or air conditioning, and after one excruciatingly hot summer we've had it! I have been researching affordable ways to cool our house and have discovered the "Two-stage evaporative cooler." It is supposed to be similar to a swamp cooler, but without the "swamp" humidity, and more energy efficient than a window air conditioner, and less expensive than completely revamping our heating and cooling system. We live in semi-arid to desert climate (temperatures often reaching 100 degrees in the peak of summer, with relatively low humidity, except for the occasional thunderstorm). Where is the best place to buy (or the best brand to buy) and how should we go about installing one? All input is appreciated!!

Two-stage evaporative coolers can be mounted on the exterior wall, in an attic, or on an exterior concrete pad. The system is typically ducted to a central location in the home.

The larger the cooler the better for you, I Have not heard of the 2-stage , I know there's the ones with different speeds. You want to install on the side of you house that gets the most sun , if you go shade it will only work 50% and it will smell , the sunny side evaporates the water and it doesnt have time to grow algae . you can install in a window and fill the sides or cut a selected area out and frame out an opening , be sure to make it water proof , for outside weather, the unit needs to be on a level platform and remember the weight is going to increase alot due to the water for the cooler. Water weighs 6 pounds per gallon and they hold 10-15 gallons of water an maybe more. Its common sense look at the instructions. good luck

What a dick your landlord is!! You should make sure that he's really allowed to ban you from having an air conditioner.... he probably is just too cheap to pay the electric bill!! Which by the way isin't even all that much when you run an AC unit. So yeah get the evaporative cooler because it's just like an air conditioner because it runs a compressor. Keep it in your room with the door closed so he can't come in and be like "no turn that off you can't have that either" F him! So there are a ton of ppl in the apartment and he doesn't live there? How is he ever going to know that you have this in your room? Just get it and F him!
