An Iron Gate is made out of iron (suprise, suprise), and a steel gate is made out of steel (suprise, suprise). It depends on how long you want your gate to last for, where you live, the climate of where you live and if you need it to sustain heavy punishment.

I've never heard of getting this type of choice, but most railings and gates these day's are made from steel and welded together, but years ago they had iron railings and gates and these where made of cast iron, there all steel but ones moulting and poured into a cast, and the other is rolled into steel bars etc. to have gates cast today would be a fortune that's why I'm surprised someone has offered this service.

I'm a metalworker & make them, most gates and railings are made from mild steel. They were made from wrought iron originally but carbon was added to iron to make steel. I wouldn't worry about this at all. What I would recommend however, is that you ask the maker to get them galvanised. Galvanising is a process whereby they are dipped first of all into an acid bath to clean them of any rust, and then into a mixture of zinc to coat them. This is an excellent form of rust proofing. It will cost you more but it's worth it, otherwise you will be painting them every year. Any questions e-mail me and I'll help all I can.

Iron is less flexible and not as strong as steel. Also iron work may cost more than the popular steel gate.

If you're going out to dinner with it, you would iron it! If you like the neighbours, you could steel it! hehehehe

steel is probably better, more resistant to breaking and stuff like that
